About Cruisin' for Cures
A few years back, we were celebrating the most anticipated day of the year...Christmas. As the house filled with delicious smells of turkey and gravy and mouth watering casseroles, and the tree lit in bright colored lights, I couldn’t help but notice my grandfather asleep in his chair. He made it through wrapping 5 presents that morning before he was completely drained of energy. The effect of cancer.
I had remembered many years before that when my dad lost his aunt to breast cancer. Aunt Betty was her name. I don’t remember a lot about her, but I remember she was just as loving and kind and funny as the rest of my family. I saw how her death had impacted my parents and grandparents, but it wasn’t until this moment, looking at my papa, that I fully realized what was going on. He was losing the battle to esophageal cancer. A cancer self-inflicted from years of smoking.
As if that wasn’t enough to break my heart, less than a year later, my grandmother developed cancer. A cancer that was quick to consume her whole being. Eleven months after papa past away, we lost memaw too. I was not the only one who was affected by these deaths, my whole family suffered a long mourning period.
We quickly became active with the American Cancer Society by joining Relay for Life. In honor and memory of those who have battled cancer in our families, we walk every year at the Cocalico-Ephrata Relay to help raise money and awareness. Along with the 30+ other teams that walk, we have come together to help raise thousands of dollars that directly benefit cancer patients in our society!
Growing up, I have always seemed to have a passion for life and people. In memory of Jack and Shirley Lee, I have created an event that we call Cruisin’ for Cures. With the love and support from my family and community, we had a very successful first year and we look forward to Cruisin’ being bigger and better than ever!!! I firmly believe that, together, we can make a difference and I look forward to doing so!
With that said, I look forward to seeing all of you at Cruisin’ for Cures. Along with Flamin’ Dick and the Hot Rods, Feel Your Boobies will be attending with their sweet new ride! From the flea market to the car show to the awesome food and raffles that will be available, you won’t want to miss Cruisin’ for Cures 2008!!!
Very Sincerely,
